National Library
The National Library was established in 1952. In 1962 the library moved to the 2nd and 3rd floor of a small building on the Pansodan Street. Then in 1965 it moved to the Municipal Building again. In 1984 the library moved to the 1st and 2nd floor of the six storeyed building, on the Strand Road. At present the National Library is located at theCorner of Lay- daung – kan Road and East Myin Paying Kwin Road, Tarmwe Township, Yangon.

Main Function
  1. Provides a bibliographic centre of comprehensive collections on Myanmar published locally and overseas.
  2. Collect and preserve all national publications
  3. Compile and publish the Myanmar National Bibliography.
  4. Provide the interlibrary loan with libraries and institutions within the country and abroad.
  5. Promote and encourage the library movements by cooperating with internationally.
  6. Acquire collections from Southeast Asian countries and disseminate to people.
  7. Compile and publish the indexes of Myanmar periodicals and bibliographies onMyanmar.
  8. Provide the in–service training to profession from other libraries and practical training to students from library school.
Acquisition and Collection
The Library acquires its holdings through legal deposit, exchange with libraries in abroad, gifts, donations from private and organizations, requisitions, and purchase. Materials are added to the collections of the Library at a rate of 3000 volume per year.
Rare Books Collection
This collection comprises printed books published before and in 1900 including the earliest publication, Alphabetum Burmanum published in 1776, and serials published before and in 1948. Some of those are copied for the public use. Originals are restricted to researchers by special request. Digitization of these has been initiated using in –house system.
Books on Myanmar
It comprises publications on Myanmar ( in English)published locally and oversea. Conversion bibliographic data of this collection from card into machine-readable from has been initiated using CDS/ISIS. More than 3000 volumes of the collection are available for reference and research purposes.
Manuscripts Collections
The Library is proud of her rich collection of rare and valuable ancient Myanmar manuscripts, palm-leaf and folded paper book ( Parabaik) that are regarded as sacred objects because the majority of them are Buddhist religious texts and commentaries. Some manuscripts contain medical, astrological, mathematical, technical, historical documents and works on customary law. Most of them are at least 100 years old and some of them are about 200 years old.

Serials Collection
A number of local and foreign serials such as journals, magazines, newsletters, indexes, government gazettes, acts and enactments, annual reports and current and retrospectives newspapers are available and research. A number of magazine articles are indexed for the easy use.
Reference Services
The national Library of Myanmar being a reference library offers a variety of services for the library users.Reference and research enquires can be made through telephone, letter, personal enquires and other.
Bibliographic Services
As the National Library is a Depository Centre of the nation, it has preserved all publications in Myanmar using standard bibliographic description with the purpose to compile the national bibliography.
Children Centre
The Children Centre has recently been initiated with children literature such as tale books, illustration books, children journals etc.
Library Education
The National Library of Myanmar actively participates in the library education movements by offering lectures to other institutions and practical training at the library, and offering basic courses on library science to the staffs.
Library Cooperation
The National Library of Myanmar established the cooperation with the universities and colleges libraries, public libraries and research libraries with the country abroad. It becomes a member of IFLA in 1992, of NLG_SEA in 1997 and CONSAL in 2000.
Preservation and Conservation

A Preservation and Conservation Section has been established in National Library by starting with books binding and repairing. The section has been extended its work to include preservation and conservation for rare manuscripts, palm-leaf and folded paper parchment (Parabaik) by microfilming, repairing, stabilization, Digitization of very rare and old manuscripts and books is initiated.
